# Plans and billing

> Understand FlaskNote's Free, Plus, Lab, and Academia Lab plans and how billing works.

FlaskNote uses two billing systems: account-level billing for personal plans, and workspace-level billing for team plans.

## Plans at a glance

| Plan         | Best for                                      | Billing model                  |
| ------------ | --------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------ |
| Free         | Individual researchers evaluating the product | —                              |
| Plus | Serious solo researchers who need more space | Per-account, monthly or annual |
| Lab | Biotech, CROs, pharma, and commercial teams | Per-seat, monthly or annual |
| Academia Lab | Academic research groups, university labs     | Flat-rate, annual-only         |

## Current public pricing

* Free at \$0/month
* Plus at \$12/month, or \$10/month on annual billing
* Lab at \$18/seat/month, or \$15/seat/month on annual billing
* Academia Lab at \$50/month (up to 10 seats), with an optional +\$30/month add-on for up to 20 total seats, billed annually

## Personal Space plans

Personal Space stays on the personal plan track. It does not turn into a workspace plan.

| Plan | Projects | Notebooks | Storage | Sharing                                     |
| ---- | -------- | --------- | ------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| Free | 1        | 100       | 50 MB   | View-only links                             |
| Plus | 25       | Unlimited | 1 GB    | View-only links and view-only email sharing |

Plus also adds version history for serious solo work.

## Workspace plans

Lab and Academia Lab share the same workspace feature set.

That shared workspace surface includes:

* collaborative Lab workspaces
* unlimited projects and notebooks
* shared workspace storage
* members and invitations
* inventory
* bookings
* templates
* activity

Audit log, exports, and external collaborators remain planned for both workspace plans rather than being reserved for a separate premium tier.

## Seat definition

A seat is consumed by either:

* an active workspace member
* a pending workspace invitation

This means inviting someone reserves capacity before they accept.

## Billing models

### Personal billing (Plus)

Plus is billed to the individual account. It upgrades the user's Personal Space with higher limits, version history, and read-only email sharing. Plus does not include team collaboration.

### Workspace billing (Lab and Academia Lab)

Lab and Academia Lab are billed to the workspace owner. One subscription per workspace, one invoice.

**Lab** uses per-seat billing. The workspace owner pays based on the number of active members and pending invitations. Monthly or annual billing is available.

**Academia Lab** uses flat-rate annual billing. The base plan covers up to 10 seats at \$50/month (billed annually). One optional add-on block adds capacity for up to 20 total seats at +\$30/month on the same annual invoice. Maximum 20 seats at the academic rate. Access requires institutional verification.

## Why billing works this way

FlaskNote is designed so paid team collaboration stays meaningful.

* Per-workspace billing keeps procurement simple with one invoice per workspace
* Flat-rate academia pricing eliminates admin friction when students rotate in and out
* Per-seat commercial pricing scales revenue with team growth
* Separate personal and workspace billing prevents loopholes where one paid account informally supports a large group

## How billing management works in the current app

* Plus is managed at the individual account level
* Lab workspace billing is managed by the workspace owner
* Pending workspace invitations count toward seat usage
* Academia Lab still starts through verification and support-assisted handling rather than a fully self-serve academic checkout path

## Restricted billing state

If a workspace runs out of seats or billing becomes restricted, new seat-consuming actions should pause until the owner resolves the workspace billing state.

The intended posture is to keep existing data readable rather than hard-locking teams out of their work.
